Composting Tip: Creating a Balanced Mix

A successful compost pile requires a balanced mix of organic materials. Aim for a mixture of “green” and “brown” materials. “Green” materials include kitchen scraps, such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and plant trimmings. These provide nitrogen. “Brown” materials include dry leaves, straw, and shredded paper. These provide carbon. Alternate layers of green and brown materials in your compost pile to ensure proper decomposition.
