Fertilizing Tips for Tulips

For optimal growth, fertilize tulips in the fall before the ground freezes. Use a slow-release bulb fertilizer or a balanced organic fertilizer, following the package instructions for application rates. Avoid fertilizing tulips after they bloom, as this can redirect energy to the foliage instead of developing strong bulbs for next year’s flowers. After fertilizing, make sure to water the tulips thoroughly to help the nutrients reach the roots. Lastly, remove the dead flowers and allow the foliage to naturally turn yellow and wither before cutting it back.
