Orchid Fertilizing Guide

When it comes to fertilizing orchids, it’s important to remember that they have unique nutritional needs. Opt for a balanced orchid fertilizer with a ratio such as 20-20-20 or 20-10-20. This will ensure a good balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. During the active growth period, which usually coincides with warmer months, fertilize the orchids every two weeks. However, during the resting period, usually in cooler months, reduce the frequency to once a month. It’s crucial to dilute the fertilizer before application to avoid burning the delicate roots. For epiphytic orchids, apply the fertilizer at the base of the plant, avoiding contact with the leaves. Terrestrial orchids benefit from a light application around their root zone. Finally, remember to flush the pots with plain water every few waterings to remove any fertilizer buildup. Following these guidelines will help your orchids thrive and reward you with vibrant and healthy blooms.
