Pruning Irises for Better Blooms

To ensure better blooms with irises, it is essential to properly prune them. In late fall or early spring, trim the iris leaves to about six inches in length to reduce the risk of fungal diseases and promote better air circulation. Remove any dead or yellowing foliage throughout the growing season to maintain a tidy appearance and avoid pest problems. After the irises have finished blooming, cut back the flower stalks to the base and divide the rhizomes every three to four years to prevent overcrowding and rejuvenate the plants for healthy growth.
